Literacy and Local Fashions – That’s A Blooming Affair!

October truly is my favourite month of the year. There are always fabulous events and holidays to look forward to…. like Thanksgiving, Halloween, Oktoberfest, and of course, the A Blooming Affair Fashion Show! This premiere Oktoberfest event “kicks off” the fun-filled Bavarian festival, showcasing the many local retailers that call our Region home. And yes, I had the opportunity to attend!

Each year, the event attracts hundreds of women (and a few men), for a fabulous night out. There’s a boulevard of boutiques for shopping, amazing door prizes, and a bar or two for the non-designated driver(s). Some of our favourite “fashion folks” were in attendance, including Stylfrugal, More Than Half, and fb and me, who have particularly amazing items for fall (trust me, I got a peak last night :)).

The boulevard was packed with lovelies strutting their stuff and picking up a fall piece or two…Even this year’s Mrs. Oktoberfest was there for the fun! I was lucky enough to run into this stunner, and good friend Vanessa, who was also a contestant in this year’s Mrs. Oktoberfest competition! We sure have style here in Waterloo Region.

This year’s fashion show line-up featured many local retailers including: Nantucket, Unique Boutique, Taya, La Crème, Gloss and fb and me, just to name a few! Models from Expressions by DSK took the runway to showcase the hottest fall looks. Looks that definitely inspired some “outfit envy,” from those in the audience.

A wonderful part of the event is always their support of a charity, providing half of the raffle proceeds to an important cause. This year, the selected partner was Strong Start, a  local children’s charity that helps young children learn to read through its early literacy programs.

Promoting literacy is one hot topic in today’s society, with celebrities like Usher and Taylor Swift  joining the rally to inspire young learners to “pick up a book.” Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2014 Children’s Fashion Show was even in support of the designer’s literacy program. Check out the video here:

Overall, the A Blooming Affair committee pulled off a wonderful event, showcasing local fashion and literacy to attendees of all ages. With the Oktoberfest season finally upon us readers (yay), it’s time to don those dirndls and of course, drink responsibly.

Enjoy the festivities.
